Cleaning Your Toothbrush

Posted .

Do you ever wonder if it’s necessary to sanitize your toothbrush? If so, our dentist, Dr. Jackie Brown, is happy to help you find that answer! Because our mouths and our bathrooms contain countless amounts of bacteria, it common to feel the need to clean your toothbrush.

According to the American Dental Association, toothbrush cleaning is not necessary. This is because there is no evidence that proves that the bacteria on our toothbrushes cause oral or systemic health issues. Therefore, there is no need to worry about cleaning your brush. However, there are things you can do to keep your brush in tip-top shape, and those things are:

-Rinse your toothbrush head in warm water when you’re done brushing.
-Wait until your toothbrush bristles are dry to place a toothbrush cover over the head of the brush.
-Store your toothbrush in an upright position to let it air dry.
-Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months or when the bristles have frayed.

If you feel like you absolutely have to sanitize your toothbrush, it won’t hurt. You can do so by soaking your toothbrush in antibacterial mouthwash for about 15 minutes.
